The Sharpe Bugger-o-meter™ ~ An Introduction
Before reading the entry for the Bugger-o-meter™, it is recommended that you read the following useful vocabulary:
Bugger
Noun ~ British English, offensive slang
1 An offensive word used to insult somebody, especially a man, and to show anger or dislike.
e.g.: Come here, you little bugger!
2 Used to refer to a person, especially a man, that you like or feel sympathy for.
e.g.: Poor bugger! His wife left him last week!
Verb ~ British English, offensive slang
1 Used as a swear word when somebody is annoyed about something or to show they do not care at all.
e.g.: Bugger! I've left my keys at home!
Bugger it! I've burnt the toast!
Oh, bugger the cost, let's buy it anyway!
2 To break or ruin something.
e.g.: I think the computer's buggered.
Common Usage:
Idiom: Bugger me! (to show surprise)
Phrasal verb: to bugger about (waste time in a silly way with no clear purpose)
Phrasal verb: Bugger off! (often used as an order: to go away)
Phrasal verb: to bugger something up (to do something badly or spoil something)
Noun: bugger all (nothing at all; none at all)
e.g.: I sat at home last night and did bugger all.
Well, she was bugger all help.
Adjective: buggered (do not use before noun): Very tired, or broken or ruined (see above Verb, point 2)
Idiom: I'll be buggered! (to show surprise)
Idiom: I'll be buggered if… (used to say that you do not know something, or refuse to do something)
e.g.: I'm buggered if I know.
I'll be buggered if I'm going to help her after what she said to me.
Bugger-o-meter™
Device for measuring the number of (above) words deriving from 'bugger', used within a defined space of time, to determine how offensive, adventurous or exciting something is, on a scale of one to ten. This may also include other words, such as the noun 'arse', the verb 'to tan' and other, miscellaneous invectives.
E.g.: The Sharpe episode "Sharpe's Waterloo" rates a nine on the Bugger-o-meter™.
